A spirit of resistance
That feeling when … you’re the only woman in the room and it’s as if you’re invisible. Joyce del Rosario tells of her experience as one of just a few female PhD students in theology and how she created a space for collaboration and community among these women. Take Joyce’s words as inspiration — what would it be like for you to assemble a group like this?
“From an outsider's perspective, it may have looked like I started a book club of sorts. What we were actually doing was an act of resistance.”
As we consider the spirit of resistance, let us suggest that taking space for reflection and preparation — especially as the holiday season approaches — can be a counter-cultural act. Natalie d’Aubermont Thompson writes of the ways autumn reflects her own inner rhythms of preparation for a new liturgical year.
“I see this transition time as a time to intentionally reflect on the year; to store up my reserves for the active waiting that December requires. I need the falling of the leaves to leave me a bit bare, a bit exposed, as it forces me to confront my sacred, ordinary days with the Lord with prayer and purpose.”
