Be kind to yourself
Have you messed up lately? Many of us are pretty hard on ourselves and it’s taking a toll on our mental, physical, and spiritual health. The research abounds on the benefits of self-compassion, but how does this concept fit in with our understanding of God? Therapist A. C. Grace delves deeply into this therapeutic practice and points us to the truest source of all compassion work.
“I wonder if we might embrace self-compassion more fully by clearly seeing the purest source of any compassion we experience: God himself. ”
Treating yourself kindly can take many forms, and time spent in nurturing community is one of the most beneficial practices we can think of. We’re reminded of this piece by Heather Walker Peterson that bemoans the lack of role models in her life calling and invites fellow full-time working mothers to think creatively about filling that gap.
“My mama friends and I, we’re going to determine with our husbands what parenting and working full-time looks like. We’re going to pray a lot and consult the limited number of role models we have. We’re going to let go of shame and announce on social media when we’ve spent three hours grading papers while our kids watch Despicable Me 1 and 2 back-to-back.”
