Opportunities for women in science to take the lead.
How do your values help you to locate your own North Star for your engagement in your work? Why is a good mentor, one who gives you opportunities to do what you haven’t done before, so critical? This week, Nancy Pedulla continues her series of The Wise & Courageous Podcast with medical doctor and professor Quyen Ngo Metzger. Quyen shares her wisdom on leading by inspiring others and developing them so that they focus on their strengths. Listen for the way Quyen has learned to function authentically amid challenges. And don’t miss out on the other interviews from this series, all found on The Women Scholars & Professionals Podcast.
“Somebody came to me and said, ‘You are not supposed to sit at the table. You work for the government; you are supposed to let the guests sit at the table.’ And I reflected on it and I thought-absolutely not! You recruited me into government because I have a degree in medicine, because I have a Public Health and Policy degree. Why should I be sitting back and not contribute at the table? I think that was instrumental to my leadership style.”
For those who are called into the sciences, it quickly becomes clear that the work doesn’t end in the lab. Questions about ethics, political power, and culture spiral out from technical study as findings impact the world. We’re reminded of the story of Mary Schweitzer, an unlikely paleontologist whose groundbreaking research drew questions and criticism that Mary learned to respond to with grace and authority, finding that her faith wove through every element of her work. (You can read part 1 and part 2 of her story.) What kind of support do you need as you boldly pursue God’s truth, beauty, and goodness in our world?
“And how fair would it be if God put us on a changing planet and didn’t build into us the ability to change? If you remember the character of God, I don’t think any of this is a problem. I just don’t. It took me a while to get here. ”
A note. If you head to The Well, you might notice a few little things that are different about our website — including a new landing page for Women Scholars & Professionals!
While we’re in the middle of some behind-the-scenes construction, some website features might be on the blink — so let us know if you have trouble finding anything. In the meantime, any new content will be posted here on our Substack page. Thanks for your patience with us!
