Double loneliness and sleep
At The Well This Week
Karen Guzmán discusses the idea of double loneliness (see the description below) and reminds us that Jesus is present with us, even when we are called to hard things.
"It’s the experience of being marginalized, misunderstood, or not appreciated in a discipline, department, or institution when one’s faith influences teaching, research, and service in the university. At the same time faculty don’t feel fully at home — accepted, understood, and affirmed — by their faith communities who don’t value their academic work and see the liberal university as an enemy to be conquered or are suspicious of any “truth” which emerges from it or both.”
Read this timely reminder from Tish Harrison Warren in which she advises getting sleep as part of spiritual formation.
“In our increasingly technological, workaholic, image-barraged, caffeinated, entertainment-addicted, supercharged culture, remembering our limited, embodied creatureliness is a difficult and necessary part of discipleship.”
You’re Invited!
How are your digital habits shaping you? Join us for a conversation with Felicia Wu Song, author of our fall book club selection, Restless Devices, on November 16 at 9:00 pm (Eastern). We’d love to have you even if you haven’t been part of the book club (but you’re also welcome to join the last book club call on November 8.) Sign up for the conversation here and find more details on the book club here.
Christian + Academic + Mother. It's not easy, right? Join us on Monday, November 14 at 8:00 pm (Eastern) for a continuation of the conversations we began last fall as we read and discussed Power Women: Stories of Motherhood, Faith, and the Academy. For more information, register here!
InterVarsity's Black Scholars and Professionals have two invitations for you!
Black faculty pursuing tenure or promotion are convening monthly on Zoom to provide prayer support and encouragement. The group will spur each other on to good works as they set and reach goals in the tenure process. From time to time, tenured Black faculty will join to provide tips and insights that helped along the way. Please contact Felicia Anderson for more information and to register.
Join us for Weekly Prayer. Click here for more information.
Three More Things We Loved This Week
I can’t really improve on this headline: “This woman bakes recipes she finds on gravestone epitaphs: ‘They’re to die for’.”
