How to love your neighbor
What steps do we need to take to cultivate honest and caring community? We chatted with author Kathy Khang about her thoughts on supportive friendships, social media, and moving beyond mere civility and into love. This transcribed interview explores themes in her new book, Loving Disagreement: Fighting for Community through the Fruit of the Spirit, plus a handful of tips on living a rich and full empty-nest life.
“What I’ve learned in the more than 20 years of communicating in online spaces is I can’t control other people’s behavior (besides blocking or filtering comments on my posts), but I can control mine and invite the Holy Spirit to continue to form me and my interactions. ”
Honesty and support is welcome in the classroom as well. We’re reminded of Carmen Imes’s wise counsel about using a gentle and direct approach in potential conflicts with students. Even for those of us outside classroom contexts, these ideas can apply to almost any working or personal relationship.
“I’m discovering that in some cases being proactive about potential conflict is far less draining than avoiding it. Some of my favorite conversations with students have resulted from taking the initiative to address difficult issues.”
