Special Edition: Thanksgiving Eve
We’re offering this special Thanksgiving Eve edition of the newsletter in lieu of our standard Friday mailing of The Weekly Well. Our usual schedule will resume on Friday, December 1.
For those of us in the United States, Thanksgiving Day is tomorrow. While this can be a time for joyful feasting with loved ones, some of us may be anticipating the holiday season with some level of trepidation. How can we celebrate Thanksgiving when we're full of sadness or grief? A. C. Grace offers Scripture and reflective tools to help approach the holiday with our whole selves.
“I remember meals where we sat joyfully, giving thanks with each other. I also remember years where the prompt to give thanks brought about tears that couldn’t find words, tears that expressed deep pain and sorrow in contrast with thanks.”
Thanksgiving prompts us to look at the liturgical calendar and note that Advent begins on December 3, less than two weeks from today. But what exactly is Advent and how can we observe it well? Anglican priest and author Tish Harrison Warren joined us on the podcast for a discussion of her recent book, Advent: The Season of Hope, where she offers grace-filled suggestions for praying through Advent as an academic.
“Advent turns our eyes away from [ourselves] toward this much bigger story of God’s salvation of all the cosmos.”
