Most of us have been there over the past few years — sick with Covid, nursing symptoms, trying to take it easy. But for some of us, those symptoms lingered into a diagnosis of Long Covid, complete with questions about future, identity, and livelihood. Writer Stephanie White invites us into her gradual recovery and the lessons she is learning in the process.
“My brain fog was so bad that I couldn’t make sense of any nonfiction longer than a paragraph. It was terrifying, mostly because I hadn’t realized how much my brain and its function were central to my identity: without my brain, who was I?”
Questions of identity can arise in other spheres, too, highlighting ways that our identities impact our relationships with others. We’re reminded of this piece by Joyce del Rosario — her clear ownership of the title “Dr. del Rosario” offers a gift to her students and colleagues.
“When students call me Dr. del Rosario, I have now normalized a classroom experience for them to have a brown woman teach their doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate classes.”
